Located in San Luis Potosí, Cráter La Joya Honda is one of the deepest maar craters in the world. Supposedly, created from an implosion from volcanic activity in which the water disappeared underground. The approximate size is 800m wide x 200m deep and has fantastic views from the edge, as well as from below.
To get here can be a challenge to most. Located off of Mexico 57, you have to drive for about 20-30 minutes in areas not suitable for most small cars. A pickup truck is best to go in, or a vehicle with all wheel drive because some areas of the “road” have crevices that you don’t want to get stuck in. Don’t expect cell service in the area too so make sure your vehicle is the right fit. We did take a large sedan on our first trip and made it with no problem, but my wife and I agreed to take the truck next time. If your car is really low, do not go.
When you get off 57, just keeping following the roads until you see signs for La Joya Honda. You will pass by some ranchos and it will seem like you don’t know where to go, but then a sign will appear to help you along the way.
Cráter La Joya Honda was created to be a public park, but it has been abandoned, so don’t expect bathrooms or any employees. In fact, every time I go here we are the only ones that are in the area. They do have a few shelter areas around the rim of the crater for you to rest at while walking around the rim.
To walk down to the bottom of the crater, there are wooden stairs that lead to concrete stairs that leads to a trail to get to the bottom of the crater. Remember that you have to walk all the way back up too! There is a trail that you can walk through on the bottom and it is fairly clear, until you forget that there are thorny bushes and cacti around you and you don’t pay enough attention! The dirt ground is very soft so your shoes and socks will get very dusty.
Cráter La Joya Honda looks like a great place to repel or scale the sides of the crater. Legend has it that bandits used the caves in the walls to hide money stolen during the Mexican Revolution.
Make sure you take plenty of water, food and a couple of friends with you. You are pretty much in an isolated area so going alone is not recommended.
